This process produces acetaldehyde, a compound even more toxic than alcohol itself. Normally, acetaldehyde quickly converts into acetate, which the body can eliminate. But when you drink heavily, acetaldehyde builds up, causing many unpleasant symptoms.
Alcohol also affects your brain chemistry. It depresses the central nervous system, slowing down brain function and altering neurotransmitter levels. This disruption leads to impaired judgment, slower reflexes, and mood changes. After the alcohol wears off, your brain struggles to rebalance, which contributes to hangover symptoms like irritability and fatigue.

Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production. This causes dehydration, one of the main reasons for hangover headaches and dry mouth.
